Mr. Nick Hinman
Director of Bands

Mr. Hinman is in his fourteenth year of teaching, and his fifth year as Director of Bands at Chaparral High School in Parker, CO. Having continued a family legacy at Chaparral by replacing his father, Steve, who retired from Chaparral in Spring of 2017, Mr. Hinman is proud to carry on the great CHS band tradition!

Mr. Hinman’s duties at Chaparral High School include wind ensemble and symphonic band, marching band, jazz band, winter percussion, winter guard, pep band, pit orchestra, class piano, AP Music Theory, and music appreciation. The bands annually perform at festivals around Colorado, and consistently receive superior or excellent ratings.

Mr. Hinman went to the University of Colorado-Boulder where he earned Bachelors degrees in Trumpet Performance and Music Education. While at CU, he studied conducting with Allan McMurray and Matthew Roeder, as well as trumpet with Terry Sawchuk.  Mr. Hinman performed with the Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and “Golden Buffalo” Marching Band, where he was Drum Major for 3 years.   He was also a brother of the Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band service fraternity, serving as Chapter President his senior year. In the summers of 2015 and 2016, Mr. Hinman earned his Masters of Music Education degree at the VanderCook College of Music in Chicago, IL, having been elected as one of three graduating class officers by his graduating peers.

Mr. Hinman marched in drum and bugle corps for five years.  He spent four summers as a trumpet player and section leader with the Blue Knights, based out of Denver, and “aged out” as a conductor with the Phantom Regiment, based out of Rockford, IL, who were named the DCI World Championships Silver Medalists in 2006.  He is positive that his five drum corps summers completely changed his life for the better, and he is sure that drum corps is the closest thing there is to being a musician and an athlete.

Mr. Hinman is a member of the National Association of Music Educators (NAfME), Colorado Bandmasters Association (CBA), and Colorado Music Educators Association (CMEA),and American School Band Directors Association (ASBDA).  Outside of school, Mr. Hinman is an avid fitness enthusiast, marathoner, half marathoner, and triathlete.  Burritos and coffee are two of his favorite things, he loves going to concerts, and when he grows up, he wants to either be a movie critic or conduct on Broadway. Mr. Hinman keeps up with his musicianship by playing in community groups such as the Broomfield Symphony and Colorado Wind Ensemble, gigs at churches, and the occasional musical.  Mr. Hinman is also a huge music theory nerd, arranging for the CHS bands on occasion.
