About Us

There is a place for every student that is willing to participate in band at CHS! Listed below is information for each band - feel free to read through the course blurbs.

Marching Band

Marching Band is open to students in all grades, and students will perform high quality literature while continuing to develop their playing techniques and musicianship.  The marching band will perform in local, regional, and national competitions and festivals.  This band will also perform at various athletic and community events.  Attendance at all marching band events is required, and performances and practices are mandatory.  In addition, students must be signed up for a 2nd semester music class.  Band students of all grade levels are highly encouraged to participate.  Students who successfully complete a season may earn a P.E. waiver to apply toward graduation requirements

      • "Toy" instruments
      • Drumset
  • Color Guard (no instrument skills required, this section is more movement and dance-oriented)

Wind Ensemble
(formerly Symphonic Band)

Wind Ensemble (formerly Symphonic Band) is considered the upper level performing band, and is open by audition only to students in all four grades.  Students will study and perform music from a diverse body of band repertoire.  To be a member of this group, a student must demonstrate a high level of musical maturity, technical proficiency, and commitment to rehearsal and practice time. Students are expected to audition for honor bands and seek additional performance opportunities.  Private lessons are strongly encouraged, and participation in all performances is required.  This band will perform in local, regional, and national competitions and festivals." 
Prerequisite: Students must participate in a 1st semester band class

Symphonic Band
(formerly Concert Band)

Symphonic Band (formerly Concert Band) is considered the lower level performing band, and is open to students in all four grades.  Students will study and perform music from a diverse body of band repertoire, and will focus on developing overall musicianship, technique, and skills.  To be a member of this group, a student must demonstrate musical maturity, technical proficiency, and commitment to rehearsal and practice time. Students are highly encouraged to audition for honor bands and seek additional performance opportunities.  Private lessons are strongly encouraged, and participation in all performances is required.  This band will perform in local and state festivals.

Jazz Band

The jazz band is an ensemble offered at Chaparral by audition only.  Musical styles studied include swing, blues, rock, samba, bossa nova, and other Latin grooves.  The jazz band attends a jazz festival each year, and performs at all concerts, including the Chaparral band feeder area concert.

Winter Percussion

The winter percussion ensemble meets after school from November until the State Championships in April.  This ensemble is open to any students interested in participating. Rehearsal schedule will be announced closer to the season.

Winter Guard

​The winter guard is open to any student at Chaparral who wants to participate.  They rehearse 2 nights a week, days and times to be determined, and their season runs from November until the State Championships in April.

Pep Band

The pep band is open to any student interested in participating, and performs at 4-6 basketball games in the winter time, depending on the schedule.  We will perform at 3-4 boys and 3-4 girls games during January/February, leading up to and including the playoffs (when applicable).  All spring band symphonic band/wind ensemble students will be required to play at 2 pep band games for a grade.  More details will be provided once we get more basketball schedule information.

Pit Orchestra

​This is the most selective ensemble for band students at Chaparral.  Students rehearse after school in January and February to put together the Spring Musical.  All musicians in this ensemble play solo parts, and it is a large commitment. Students are selected by Mr. Hinman through blind audition.
